Background of the Study

In conflict zones like Wukari Local Government Area, Taraba State, sensational news reporting has the potential to exacerbate tensions, mislead the public, and contribute to violence. Conflict reporting, especially in regions with ethnic or religious strife, is fraught with ethical challenges that require careful navigation. Sensationalism, the act of emphasizing shocking or emotional aspects of a story to attract attention, is a common feature in such reporting. While it may increase viewership or readership, sensationalism often distorts the truth and undermines the professionalism expected of journalists (Ajayi & Abdulkareem, 2023).

In Wukari, where clashes between different ethnic groups have led to significant displacement and loss of life, the media plays an essential role in informing the public and shaping perceptions. However, sensational news reporting can distort the reality of the conflict and influence public opinion in harmful ways. This study aims to investigate the ethical challenges journalists face while reporting on conflicts in Wukari, particularly the temptation to sensationalize stories and the consequences of doing so on public trust and peacebuilding efforts.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While the intention may be to attract attention to critical issues, the ethical ramifications of such practices can be severe, leading to public confusion, increased fear, and even further violence. The ethical responsibility of journalists to provide accurate, balanced, and constructive coverage is often compromised in favor of sensational headlines. This study seeks to identify and examine the ethical dilemmas journalists face while reporting from conflict zones in Wukari, and the broader implications for conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and public trust in the media.
